Avoid wasting your money

You work hard, you try and save regularly but there is always someone out to prise that hard earned money out of your wallet. Find out what schemes are out there that try to separate you from your money.

  • Bargains - Supposed bargains - compare prices before you settle on buying something, especially online. Don’t think it’s a bargain just because it says so.
  • Cars - Don’t pay the full listing price on a new car - there are always discounts to be had, you just need to ask for them. Shop around and find someone who will give you the deal that you want, don’t settle for the first offer.
  • Savings - Keep your money or savings in a bank or building society, don’t hide it in daft places at home such as the oven or under floorboards. It will only get ruined or forgotten about.
  • Payment Protection - When you take out a loan or credit card don’t automatically take out the Payment protect policy. They are generally overpriced and can double your loan repayments. The small print may mean you can only claim on it in very limited circumstances anyway.
  • Scams - Don’t fall for lottery scams or rogue traders. Get references, don’t pay for anything up front or give away your bank or credit card details. You’d be surprised how many people do.
  • Mortgages - Don’t get bogged down with a bad mortgage deal. Don’t be afraid to switch to a better offer. It could save you money on a monthly basis adding up to hundreds of pounds over the course of  year
