The Times newspaper has revealed it has found several websites, over 100 in fact, that are selling bank details, PIN numbers and credit card numbers from some 32 individuals.
Reports confirm that the details are for active UK bank and credit card accounts, which is quite worrying. It would mean that someone could in theory spend thousands online.
It doesn’t mention how these details were obtained to be sold over the internet, and whilst stolen identity is still a growing problem, it is worth just making extra sure you take precautions with any of your own sensitive information of this kind.
Shred all paperwork that isn’t needed anymore, do not write down your PIN number and never give out any details to anyone by email are just 3 of the basic rules to follow.
The Information Commissioner is currently launching an inquiry into the matter.
